So I thought it would be fun, since I’m obsessed with music (listening, not playing… I have the musical talent of a block of wood) to start a ‘Top 10’ according to Last.Fm of the songs that I’ve been loving that month. Then I can look back on all the music i’ve been loving throughout the year, and everyone else can get a sort of music recommendation from me!
Fair warning, I am a serial repeater of songs. I listen to them over and over until I can’t stand to hear them anymore, so the likelihood of songs appearing in more than one month is extremely likely.
So without further ado, my top 10 played songs of January are:
1. Tears of Joy by Slow Club
I don’t think words can actually describe my intense love for this song. I am fully obsessed, and have been for at least 5 months. It’s chill, it’s unique and it’s easy to sing along to. Their entire album ‘Complete Surrender’ is incredible, but this one’s my favourite.
2. Got Well Soon by Breton
I really like the band Breton, I was really into Envy for months, but I’d never really bothered to listen to any of their other songs until I played the video game ‘Life is Strange’ and this song is in one of the scenes. After that, I couldn’t stop playing it. The singing is the standard music I like, sort of an indie/alternative vibe, but the almost techno sounding music throughout the entire song is so catchy, that I instantly loved it. I’ve listened to this an obscene amount of times since discovering it a few months ago. Highly recommend this one, and Breton!
3. Adventure of a Lifetime by Coldplay
I’ve always been a Coldplay fan, as a lover of deeply depressing music- X&Y is one of my favourites. I feel like Coldplay have a bit of a bad rap for producing music that makes you want to cry a bit, but their new music, even back to Mylo Xyloto is completely different. Their new sound is still very recognisable as Coldplay, but this song is ridiculously catchy and upbeat. Also, the video has dancing monkeys in it, what more could you want?
4. Cold Cold Man by Saint Motel
I’ve definitely already posted this on my blog, but I really don’t think Saint Motel get the recognition they deserve. Their music is catchy and upbeat, without being mainstream and overplayed (it was about time before my inner hipster made an appearance.) It was on their album, but it’s just been released as a single, so hopefully they get the recognition they deserve! Also the song starts at about 00:54 if you don’t want to sit through the intro.
5. Envy by Breton
As I mentioned before, I originally found Breton by their song Envy, from an episode of Made in Chelsea. Slightly off topic, but if you like indie/alternative music, their soundtracks are SO good for finding new bands. Anyway this song is 3 years old but I still love it, and after buying Breton’s album, I remembered how much I’d loved it before.
6. Daddy Issues by The Neighbourhood
I’m actually surprised this isn’t higher up the list, because I listened to this song on repeat for several days when I first heard it. It’s stereotypical The Neighbourhood, dark and amazing. The lyrics are fantastic, as is the song. It’s a total winner in my opinion.
7. Cry Baby by The Neighbourhood
Can you guess that I listened to The Neighbourhood’s newest album quite a fair bit last month? Basically everything I said about Daddy Issues, with a slightly more ‘upbeat’ (as upbeat as The Neighbourhood can be I guess) feel to it. It’s great. The album’s great. They’re great.
8. I Can Change by Brandon Flowers
I’d basically forgotten about this song when my dad played me the song that I Can Change samples, which is Smalltown Boy by Bronski Beat. Basically after that I went back and listened to Brandon’s version, and I pretty quickly remembered how much I liked it, so it’s had a pretty hefty play count this year already.
9. 302 Watchtowers by Breton
Can you tell I’ve been quite a fan of Breton this year? I’ve already spoken about them twice, so I won’t anymore, but this song is pretty different from the other two, and it’s just got such a nice beat that you can’t help liking it.
10. Annie by Neon Indian
And last but very much not least, this has been a total staple in all my playlists since it was released. I really like Neon Indian’s music, it’s just so interesting and instantly puts me in a good mood.
It’s pretty obvious the bands I’ve been loving this month, but every one is worth a listen! Hopefully next month I can get some variation into my playlists so I’m not writing about the exact same list!
